Sandia is located in Jim Wells County, Texas. It is a census-designated place and is in the Alice Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Sandia is Spanish for “watermelon”. The city has derived its name because of the large number of watermelons grown in the area. The city includes all of Jim Wells County and is served by the Orange Grove Independent School District.
