One of the most common types offered is the discounted nights and free weekends plan. Imagine getting electricity at a lower cost during off-peak times – it’s like a reward for using energy smarter! By encouraging people to run dishwashers or laundry during quieter hours, TOU plans help ease the strain on our local power grid.

But here’s the kicker: if you’re not careful about when you use electricity, your monthly bill could end up higher than with a standard plan. Did you know that managing your energy use could actually save you money with these plans? It’s all about timing!

Free electricity plans, like “free nights” or “free weekends,” are designed to incentivize you to shift your energy patterns to using energy during off-peak hours. These plans fall under what’s known as time-of-use (TOU) plans, which work with your smart meter to track your energy usage in 15-minute intervals. This gives your electricity provider a clear picture of when you’re using power and lets them bill you based on the time of day. If you can successfully shift your most demanding usage to these periods, you could potentially save money vs typical flat-rate electricity plans or tiered-usage plans that provide bill credits when you use a target amount of energy.

The main idea behind these plans is to shift some of the demand for electricity to times when it’s less expensive, like late at night or on weekends, when fewer people are using energy. Because energy production and distribution is cheaper during these off-peak hours, providers can offer “free” or reduced-cost power during those times.

However, there’s a trade-off. While you’ll get cheaper energy during certain hours, you’ll face higher rates (often much higher rates) during peak demand periods when the strain on the energy grid is at its highest. So, while you save during the free periods, you’ll need to be mindful of when you’re using power to avoid higher charges.

In Texas, energy companies offer time-of-use (TOU) plans to give you more control—and potentially lower your bills. These plans reflect how electricity demand actually changes throughout the day. Prices are typically higher when demand peaks, like in the late afternoon or early evening, and lower during off-peak hours, like overnight or mid-morning.

By showing you when electricity costs less, TOU plans encourage you to shift energy use—like running your dishwasher or charging your EV—to those lower-cost hours. Not only can this save you money, but it also helps reduce strain on the Texas power grid by spreading out demand more evenly throughout the day.

It’s a win-win: if you work the system right you get savings, and the grid operates more efficiently—especially during those hot summer months when Texans crank up the AC.

The phrase “there’s no such thing as a free lunch” applies to free energy plans, too. When Texas rolled out the Power to Choose program, consumers were able to compare prices from REPs directly without any marketing or brand positioning to support them. In a competitive market, this should produce a race-to-the-bottom in pricing, benefiting the consumer. Recognizing the erosion of profits in this system, the energy companies (REPs) got creative with their energy plans to produce rate structures that would make the advertised kilowatt hour energy charge appear lower while burying the real costs in tiered structures or during peak usage hours.

The picture above shows an Electricity Facts Label (EFL) for a typical time-of-use plan from Ohm Energy, aptly named the Half-Price Nights plan. During the evening from 9PM to 5:59AM, your energy rate charge (not including your TDSP pass-through energy charges) would be 6.14¢, while during the rest of the day from 6:00AM to 8:59PM your energy rate is 12.29¢ – making your evening rate half-price. At the top of the EFL, Ohm is estimating that your blended energy rate, including the two time of use rates and the TDU fees, will average out to 15.5¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh used per month. But how did they arrive at that number? They provide their formula below the price estimates, and assume that 37.5% of your usage will come during the off-peak period. If less of your energy consumption is during these off-peak hours, your bill could end up being substantially higher than their estimate.

For comparison, a comparable fixed-rate plan in the same area has an energy rate charge of 9.74¢. This is around 20% savings vs the on-peak rate.

To compare rate plan values, we used data from EIA’s Grid Monitor program to gather hourly energy demand by month, then paired it with a typical Texan household demand curve we observe in our first-party data. The demand data was matched to a typical time-of-use rate plan and a basic fixed-rate plan to compare the costs.

This table shows EIA’s total energy demand for Texas in 2024, including residential and commercial use. Because many businesses will operate around the clock or during the typical working day (like offices, warehouses, retail stores, medical centers, and more), they flatten the demand curve across peak periods and off-peak periods compared to residential demand. Therefore, expect home usage to see more pronounced spikes in the early morning and late afternoon to early evening, where this data shows a more evenly distributed trend.

This chart shows a typical Texas home’s usage patterns for a mid-size home that averages around 1,100 kWh per month. During the peak summer months, electricity utilization can nearly double vs shoulder seasons, and even the deep winter months can expect to see a 50% increase in use.

During the summer, much of the electricity consumption will be during the morning through the evening as temperatures rise fast and stay high even after sundown. With kids home from school, one or more parents working from home, and BBQs or pool parties happening, the energy consumption skyrockets.

Many customers have come to us with horror stories of sky-high bills thanks to time-of-use plans when they continued their typical energy use patterns and saw their bills balloon due to the high on-peak rate. We typically advise these users to find the cheapest fixed-rate plan available, and in some cases we may recommend a bill credit plan if their usage is consistent and the total bill estimate is lower.
